Plain News - March 10, 2010

Letter From the President,
Michael McGrew, ASLA

THE COMING THAW

It has most certainly been an unusually cold season for those of us here in Kansas and Western Missouri, but the longer days and warmer temperatures assure us that spring is just around the corner.  With the spring thaw the PGASLA 2010 calendar begins to heat up as well.

The highlight of the spring season is the annual Prairie Gateway Chapter Awards program this May 22nd.  PGASLA is excited to host our first large-scale event in our dedicated space in the heart of the Crossroads Arts District!  The event will be hosted at Prairie Gateway’s offices in 1801 McGee in Kansas City, Missouri.  The call for entries deadline is April 2, 2010.

The enduring legacy of landscape architecture in the region is keynoted in May with the 100th anniversary of Kansas City landscape architecture firm Ochsner Hare & Hare.  They will be hosting a Leadership Symposium about Placemaking on May 6th featuring Fred Kent from PPS; Gary Scott, FASLA, President of the American Society of Landscape Architects; and Bruce Knight, President of the American Planning Association.  Check www.ohhkc.com for more information.

We also have a full Wichita events calendar in the spring and summer.  Mid-May will feature a presentation at the Johnson’s Garden Center with speakers on horticulture research and from the KSU extension office.

June 25th will be our annual chapter meeting in Wichita. Last year’s event at The Alley was a hit for professionals, family, students, and sponsors from throughout the PGASLA region.  This year, the Wichita meeting will be held on Final Friday at the City Arts Building.  Final Friday, an event which celebrates Wichita’s emerging downtown arts and cultural community, features late openings of museums, restaurants, and galleries thoughout the downtown core.  We are also working on a July garden tour of Botanica in Wichita.

Further afield is the 5th Central States ASLA Conference and LARE review session in dynamic Oklahoma City, Oklahoma from April 22-24.  If you haven’t been to OKC in recent years you owe yourself a trip to one of the most transformed urban locales in the United States. Early bird registration ends March 15th.

LINKS—Prairie Gateway’s educational program is as strong as ever.  Check regularly in your e-mail for monthly programs in a variety of topics throughout this season.

We hope to see you at one of our many upcoming PGASLA events and let us know any way that we can serve you better.

Mike McGrew
2010 PGASLA President

2010 Professional Awards Program

A grand total of 650 entries were received for the 2010 Professional Awards Program, setting a new record for the largest number of entries in ASLA history. The previous record was set last year with 614 entries.  Thirty new professional members joined ASLA through the awards program this year. The jury will meet March 19-21 at the ASLA offices in Washington, DC.

Sustainable Sites Initiative Pilot Projects

The call for applications for Sustainable Sites Initiative pilot projects has closed.  A total of 345 applications were received, well above the target.

2010 ASLA Standard Form Contracts

The 2010 ASLA Standard Form Contracts package is available for purchase from the ASLA website.  The ASLA standard contracts package contains the standard form contract, standard short form contract, and corresponding guidelines for each.  This business tool has been developed to meet the needs of the profession by incorporating up-to-date critical elements of instruments of service, reasonably tailored for landscape architecture professionals and the clients they serve.  Members and nonmembers may purchase the annual licensed version for unlimited use during the current calendar year.  The DRAFT version of the package is also available for purchase to be used for reference only.  The tiered pricing remains the same for 2010 with no increases and is based on the number of employees in the firm.  Member prices are significantly discounted.

Stay tuned for more event information in the very near future!
